Whose feet will you wash?

Today is Maundy Thursday – when we remember the last meal Jesus shared with his disciples before he was crucified.  In the Gospel of John, in addition to sharing a meal, Jesus washes his disciples’ feet.  This was a surprising occurance for the disciples, because foot washing was usually done by a servant – not a respected leader and teacher.
By washing their feet, Jesus was showing them that we ALL are called to serve each other . . . no one is exempt from serving and caring for another.

What have you done to serve lately?
Do you regularly look for ways to be helpful, loving, and caring?

“So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”  John 13:14

Dreaming of Drums

All week, the music class which meets next door to my office has had a guest drummer.  I never quite realized how loud drums are!  Even when I’m home, I still hear drums beating in my head.

Though hearing drums day and night hasn’t been the most pleasant experience, it has been a reminder to me about the importance of music.  Sure, we all like to listen to our favorite artists, but have you ever thought about the importance of music to your faith life?  It’s no accident that we sing together when we gather for worship!  Making music is a great way to praise God, and to be together in community.  Listening to music can also be a wonderful opportunity to encounter God in your life.  You don’t have to listen to specifically “religious” songs to experience the presence of God in music.  Next time you are singing, playing, or listening to your favorite song, take a moment to consider how the Spirit is alive in the music.

“I will sing praises to my God all my life long.”  Psalm 146:2b

Seeing

A couple days ago, I ran across this quote by author Philip Yancey, and it has been on my mind ever since.  “The Spirit is what we see with rather than what we see.”  When you look at someone, do you see them through eyes of love and grace?  Do you see people through eyes that view the good in them, rather than the flaws?  Do your eyes seek out what you can do for another, or what they can do for you?

It’s amazing how our perspective can change just based on how we see.  So often we are focused on WHAT we see, when maybe we need to think more about HOW we see.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
